Our History
The history of the Chesa Unica goes back to around 1400. It was then built as a fairly typical Engadine farmhouse, with the cowshed on the ground floor, the Stüva on the 1st floor (a room consisting of a kitchen, living and dining room with an oven for cooking and heating) and the Ciambra above on the 2nd floor ( the bedroom for the whole family). On the right side, where the modern part of the house stands today, there was originally a hay barn that was destroyed by an avalanche around 200 years ago (before there were avalanche barriers above Zuoz). A workshop with an apartment above was built in its place around 1930 - this was partially demolished and rebuilt as part of the renovation and conversion work from 2022-2024.
Today the Chesa Unica offers a mixture of historical substance and new elements with contemporary amenities.
Be sure to explore the medieval village center of Zuoz - the prettiest village in the Upper Engadine.
